Surah Al Baqarah

allah, arabic, and islam image
●Surah baqarah : verse 286●
“Allah does not burden a soul beyond that it can bear…” (02:286)

This is the first part of Surah Baqarah's last ayah.

Root Words

The word yukaliffu (يكلف ) is from the root kaf-lam-fa and it means “to take pains.”
The word wus-aha ( وسعها ) is from the root wau-seen-ayn and it means “to be ample.”
Ample simply means enough or more than enough/ capacity.

Ayah Explanation

Allah Subhan Wa Ta'ala says,
“Allah burdens not a person beyond his scope,”
meaning He does not ask a soul what is beyond its ability. This only demonstrates Allah’s kindness, compassion and generosity towards His creation.
This indicates that although Allah will question His servants and judge them, He will only punish for what one is able to protect or abstain himself from. As for what one cannot protect himself from, such as passing thoughts, bad thoughts, they will not be punished for that. We should state here that to dislike the evil thoughts that cross one’s mind is a part of Faith. One himself is not his own judge to decide what he can do and what he cannot do. It is Allah, Who will decide what a certain person could do and what he could not do.
