Hello everyone :)

Today I am going to be writing an article on depression and 10 things to help you get through it. I am aware there are plenty of other articles out there like this but this is also a way for me to finally move on from that part of my life, a way of healing I suppose. If this does help you then I am truly happy it could. There's no better feeling than knowing you could help someone.

I advise that if you are going through depression or another mental disorder go and see a professional as they know what they are talking about. This article is just what I have been through and the things I do to help me through it.

My Depression

I won't go into detail about my depression. I'll just briefly talk about it.

I've been through very very mild depression when I was younger, 15/16. High school did take a toll on me like it does on everyone, society I also think was and still is a big factor, being alone so often, having anxiety, being shy but I got through the mild depression.

My boyfriend and I then broke up. I hit rock bottom. I thought I had already been as low as I could but loosing him I realised I hadn't even touched the surface. I thought I would never get over it and that I would be depressed for the rest of my life, I didn't see any point in living. Multiple times I thought "I don't want to be alive right now." Though I didn't want to die either, I just couldn't stand the thought to waking up and never talking to him again.

I got through it and here I am writing about one of the worst times in my life and not crying. To me that means I have healed.

Things to Help You Through

1) Cry. When you need to cry just cry. Honestly you'll feel so much better. I think when you feel like you have to cry it's your body needing to empty out the emotions, it's your body's natural instinct don't force you're body not to do something it needs to do. Once you're done raise your head and take a deep breathe. Tell yourself to keep going. Tell yourself you will get through it.

2) Ignore the negativity. Sometimes I see a quote that gives me a kick in the gut it's so negative but a lot of the times they are true. I used to save them all because it was how I felt. I thought it was a way of helping me cope. Instead it was reminding me how I felt and it actually made me feel worse. Instead find happy and positive quotes and keep them. No matter how cheesy they are.
Honestly, how you think will determine how you feel.

3) Choose to be Happy For a long time when people said they chose to be happy I was so annoyed, I thought how can you choose to be happy. I didn't believe you could because I didn't believe you could choose how you felt. But you can. One day I realised I didn't want to feel depressed and sad anymore and so I changed. Of course it didn't happen just like that but in that moment of deciding I felt like something had already changed. I continued trying to be happy and it worked. I am so much happier than I have been in a long time. Now, you have to keep working at it every day. At first it's exhausting but soon it just becomes an every day habit and soon it becomes your personality.

4) Exercise and the Outdoors The dreaded one. I know there are some people out there who just don't want to exercise or just don't see the point or can't be bothered etc etc... Yes I was one of them. Some people run, some people go to the gym, some people participate in sports. Now I would rather not do either of the above and I am sure there are others who agree and that is okay. You can still exercise. I found an app that has challenges you can complete in order to stay fit and healthy. Its called 30 Day Fitness Challenges. It's a really good app which of course you can do from home.
Now I am not saying you should get all fit and your depression will disappear because it won't but what it will do is provide a distraction if anything (I know this is only a temporary decision). It also makes your body feel better and you it could get you motivated to do other things.

Yoga and meditation is also good for the mind and body.

If you don't feel like anything in the above. You could try going for walks and or sitting outside, getting some sunlight and fresh air. Spending more time outside is good for the mind and soul.

5) One Thing at a Time This is more to do with anxiety. If you tend to worry and stress then here's one tip I think I learnt from my Mum. Worry about one thing at a time. Sounds weird I know. But say you have three or four things happening in the week coming up. Focus on the first thing that's happening. Ignore everything else and just focus on getting that done. Then focus on getting the second thing done etc. That way you aren't focusing on everything at once and your mind isn't all messy.

6) Take Some You Time There's a fine line between 'you time' and 'too much time alone'. Make sure you get a good balance. Hang out with friends, family or even your cat or dog for a while but also make sure you have some quiet 'you time'.

7) Overthinking Do Not overthink. It is a killer. I know it's very hard not to do but trust me getting into the habit of not overthinking is a wonderful thing. It'll take some practice but you'll get there if you keep trying. Just remind yourself every time you start to over think. 'It is what it is so leave it.'

8) Write Keep a journal and write everything that's going on in your head. If you don't want to don't re-read it, I actually recommend not to. Just write it out and get it out of your head and move on. If you have an unresolved issue maybe just leave it be and it should work itself out with time.

9) Music Listen to some good music, meaningful, positive, inspiring and motivating music. If you have certain songs that you love but remind you of a hard time or a certain person don't listen to it for awhile. Keep it safe but don't listen to it.

10) Have an inspiration Find someone who you look up to and who has been through the hard times and has made it through (nearly every celeb). Mine is Demi Lovato. Just use them to help you. I always think if she can do it, then so can I.
