On my 18th birthday I got diagnosed with pcos, and in this moment my life changed for me.
I got scared at one point, but on the other side I found my self esteem and fell in love with my life again after some bad years. Why?
Let me tell you about it...

What's this?

pcos = polycystic ovarian syndrome
It's basically the hormonal imbalance of reproductive hormones that causes problems in the ovaries. So pcos causes missed or very irregular periods, which can lead to infertility.

What causes it?

The excact cause is unknown, but there are several factors like high levels of androgens and high levels of insulin. Every woman has a small amount of androgens in her body. Women with pcos have more than normal. This can cause extra hair growth and acne, two signs of pcos.
Insulin controles how the food you eat is changed into energy. When you eat something, your blood (sugar) level rises and falls down after some time -> sugar is getting into your muscles.
When you have a resistance, your cells do not respond normally to insulin and your blood levels become higher than normal. Women with pcos and an insulin resistance are overweight, obese, have unhealthy eating habits and have a family history of diabetes (type 2). Over time, it can also lead to diabetes type 2.

How it is treated?

Important: There is no cure for pcos.
But you can manage the symptoms of pcos. In my case (I do have high levels of androgens and an insuline resistance), I stopped eating sugar. Not just sugary sweets, drinks etc. I try not to eat things like bread, noodles, potatoes,.. and yes, it's hard, but I really don't want to get diabetes. (duh)

Symptoms for pcos:

- Irregular menstrual cycle
- too much hair
- acne
- hair loss
- weight gain, difficulty losing weight
- skin tags

1 in 10 women do have PCOS, but most of them don't even know it exists. It's so important to inform and spread the word. If you have any questions about my progress, problems, PCOS or your # thoughts on this article, please feel free to message me at any time!!

I wish you all the best for 2018.
Stay healthy guys.
