are you frantically searching for a new series to devour? well, look no further, my friend. below are a set of small (and comprehensive, i hope) reviews of some of my personal favorites. enjoy!

NOTE: parts of this article are biased (some notes about these shows are derived from my personal opinions) and i suggest keeping that in mind as you read.

1. the office
[ a multitude of characters work under an incompetent manager at a paper company in scranton, PA. ]
- genre: comedy
- seasons: 9
- episode length: about 20 min
- episodes per season: about 25
- bechdel test: passes (barely)
- netflix: has it!
- best aspects: cast chemistry/character relationships, humor, steve carell
- worst aspects: major secondhand embarrassment/cringe at times, last few seasons don't have steve carell :(

2. sherlock
[ a high functioning sociopath and an ex-army doctor form an unlikely bond and solve crimes. ]
- genre: mystery/drama
- seasons: 4
- episode length: about 1.5 hours
- episodes per season: 3
- bechdel test: doesn't pass
- netflix: has it!
- best aspects: chemistry/relationship b/w sherlock and john and sherlock and moriarty, soundtrack, engaging individual mysteries
- worst aspects: season 4 introduces questionable storyline

3. documentary now! (exclamation point included)
[ each episode is a parody of a different documentary. ]
- genre: mockumentary
- seasons: 2 (more coming, i believe?)
- episode length: about 1 hour
- episodes per season: about 7
- bechdel test: doesn't pass (although it feels odd applying it to this
show)
- netflix: has it!
- best aspects: quirky/niche humor, bill hader and fred armisen
- worst aspects: not all episodes are funny to every person because the style/basis of each parody differs

4. parks and recreation
[ a multitude of characters work in a local government office. their respective careers and relationships are followed. ]
- genre: comedy
- seasons: 7
- episode length: about 20 min
- episodes per season: about 22
- bechdel test: passes!
- netflix: has it!
- best aspects: humor, characters/personalities, awesome/satisfying ending
- worst aspects: season 1 is short and generally not believed to be very good compared to the rest of the show

5. stranger things
[ a young boy goes missing. his family, friends, and a girl with mysterious powers work together to find him. nothing is as it seems. ]
- genre: sci-fi
- seasons: 2 (more coming!)
- episode length: about 1 hour
- episodes per season: about 8
- bechdel test: passes! (only in season two, i believe)
- netflix: has it!
- best aspects: cast chemistry, creative/intelligent/engaging plot, setting/time period
- worst aspects: unsettling at times (but only if you're easily scared like myself), lots of dramatic irony (that frustrates me, at least)

6. bob's burgers
[ a bizarre but loving family works together to run a burger restaurant. ]
- genre: comedy (cartoon)
- seasons: 8 (more eps coming!)
- episode length: about 20 min
- episodes per season: about 20
- bechdel test: passes!
- netflix: doesn't have it :(
- best aspects: humor, unique/funny characters, creative episode premises
- worst aspects: not good for binging (to me, it isn't quite as funny after too many episodes)

7. freaks and geeks
[ a girl and her younger brother navigate the minefield of high school and their individual identities in the early eighties. ]
- genre: teen drama
- seasons: 1
- episode length: about 45 min
- episodes per season: 18
- bechdel test: passes!
- netflix: has it!
- best aspects: character journeys, general message, setting/time period
- worst aspects: somewhat unsatisfying ending, unfinished

8. arrested development
[ a dysfunctional and wealthy family runs a construction company that is equally as dysfunctional and wealthy. ]
- genre: comedy
- seasons: 4
- episode length: about 20 min
- episodes per season: about 17
- bechdel test: passes!
- netflix: has it!
- best aspects: michael cera, dysfunctionality of characters/their relationships, humor
- worst aspects: season 4 (the revival season) is extremely disappointing

9. psych
[ a fake psychic and his straight-laced best friend solve crimes in santa barbara, CA. ]
- genre: comedy/crime
- seasons: 8
- episode length: about 45 min
- episodes per season: about 15
- bechdel test: passes (barely)
- netflix: doesn't have it :(
- best aspects: chemistry b/w shawn and gus (esp in later seasons), recurring jokes, creative individual mysteries
- worst aspects: humor is maybe not the most refined in earlier seasons/episodes

NOTE, AGAIN: the bechdel test requires that 1. two named women 2. have a conversation 3. about something other than a man. it's sort of difficult to apply to tv shows, but i did my best to asses the ones here using both outside research and my own memory. if i say "barely" it probably means less episodes met the aforementioned requirements than some other shows. if i am incorrect about any of the series above, i sincerely apologize. ok bye!
