I wanna be your endgame
I wanna be your first string
I wanna be your A-Team (oh oh oh)
I wanna be your endgame, endgame

An endgame is a planned, final outcome, in which Taylor wants the guy to do what it takes to be with her. In sports, the first string consists of players that regularly play; they’re the first picks.

The A-Team was an ‘80s TV show that covered the lives of four members of the US Army that were put in military prison “for a crime they didn’t commit,” and ended up escaping and working as mercenaries. In the song’s connotation, it portrays somewhat of a Bonnie and Clyde idea, sticking together until the end.

With Ed Sheeran as a feature, it’s worthy to note that the song that catapulted his career was his debut single “The A Team.” There, Ed describes a girl being in the Class A Team, with Class A referring to highly addictive drugs, leading to another metaphor for Taylor’s desire to be her man’s #1.

Big reputation, big reputation
Ooh, you and me, we got big reputations
Ah, and you heard about me
Ooh, I got some big enemies (yeah)
Big reputation, big reputation
Ooh, you and me would be a big conversation (git git)
Ah, and I heard about you (yah)
Ooh, you like the bad ones too

Taylor Swift has been known to engage in ongoing fights with celebrities like Kanye West, Kim Kardashian, and Katy Perry. This was also addressed in “Look What You Made Me Do”.

Her fight with Kanye started at the 2009 VMA’s when Kanye claimed that “Beyoncé had the best music video of all time.” Since then, Kanye took some shots at Taylor with the most significant attack coming from “Famous”:

“I feel like me and Taylor might still have sex
Why? I made that bitch famous (Goddamn)
I made that bitch famous”

Although Taylor initially denied it, Kanye proved that Taylor gave her blessing for the first line of the verse in a phone call with a video posted to Kim’s Snapchat.
Taylor and Katy used to be best friends, until a dispute about backup dancers split up their friendship. Since then, their songs have included jabs at each other—see “Bad Blood” and “Swish Swish”.

Additionally, “you heard about me” is a reference to her song 2014 “Blank Space,”, which also explores her reputation as portrayed by the media:

“Ain’t it funny?
Rumors fly, and I know you heard about me”.

You so dope, don't overdose, I’m so stoked, I need a toast
We do the most, I'm in the Ghost like I'm whippin’ a boat

“Ghost” is a reference to the luxury car Rolls-Royce Ghost, which can cost more than half a million dollars.

I got a reputation, girl, that don't precede me (yah)

“My reputation precedes me” means that what someone is known for is usually the first thing people hear about him. Each singer incorporates this into their verse, but Future is the only one to say his reputation isn’t upfront. He has however had a bit of a past, notably with allegedly cheating on ex-fiancee Ciara.

I'm a call away whenever you need me (yeah)
I'm in a G5 (yah), come to the A-Side (yah)

Future reminds his girl that his lifestyle includes a lot of travelling and high-flying like in a G5 jet. Nonetheless, he wants her to be part of it by inviting her to ‘live on the A-side’, a reference to his hometown of Atlanta, GA.

I got a bad boy persona, that's what they like (what they like)
You love it, I love it too, 'cause you my type (you my type)
You hold me down and I protect you with my life

I don't wanna touch you, I don't wanna be
Just another ex-love you don’t wanna see
I don’t wanna miss you (I don't wanna miss you)
Like the other girls do
I don’t wanna hurt you, I just wanna be
Drinking on a beach with you all over me
I know what they all say (I know what they all say)
But I ain't tryna play

I wanna be your endgame (endgame)
I wanna be your first string (first string)
I wanna be your A-Team (A-Team)
I wanna be your endgame, endgame

Now well, when I was young, we connected
When we were little bit older, both sprung
I got issues and chips on both of my shoulders
Reputation precedes me and rumors are knee-deep

Ed may be playing a role here as he doesn’t exactly have a bad reputation. While some have noted a new arrogance upon his achieving worldwide success, his only controversy regarding relationships was the 2014 rumor that Ellie Goulding cheated on him with Niall Horan, which both Goulding and Sheeran subsequently denied.

The truth is, it's easier to ignore it, believe me
Even when we'd argue, we’d not do it for long
And you understand the good and bad end up in the song
For all your beautiful traits and the way you do it with ease
For all my flaws, paranoia, and insecurities
I've made mistakes and made some choices, that's hard to deny
After the storm, something was born on the 4th of July

The 4th of July is a national holiday in America to celebrate independence, and Taylor Swift often holds elaborate parties with her famous friends. Ed Sheeran attended her 2015 party with his now girlfriend Cherry Seaborn, and it became their first official date. He told People Magazine:

“Well, our anniversary is her 4th of July party. It was around then, and we reconnected. I went on tour again, and then I went to Taylor’s 4th of July party. I was texting [Cherry], and she was like, ‘I’m in Rhode Island at a 4th of July party,’ and I was like, ‘So am I.’ I kinda said to Taylor, ‘Can I invite one of my old schoolmates?’ The rest is history.”

The couple also attended Taylor’s 2016 4th July party, where they celebrated their first anniversary.

I've passed days without fun, this endgame is the one
With four words on the tip of my tongue, I'll never say it

The “four words” Sheeran’s beloved is waiting to hear are “Will You Marry Me?” Instead he says “I’ll never say it,” which is also four words.

I don't wanna touch you, I don't wanna be
Just another ex-love you don't wanna see
I don't wanna miss you like the other girls do
I don't wanna hurt you, I just wanna be
Drinking on a beach with you all over me
I know what they all say, yeah, but I ain't tryna play

I wanna be your endgame (endgame)
I wanna be your first string (wanna be your first string)
I wanna be your A-Team (A-Team)
I wanna be your endgame, endgame

Big reputation, big reputation
Ooh, you and me, we got big reputations
Ah, and you heard about me
Ooh, I got some big enemies
Hey, big reputation, big reputation
Ooh, you and me would be a big conversation
Ah, and I heard about you
Ooh, you like the bad ones, too

I hit you like bang, we tried to forget it, but we just couldn't
And I bury hatchets, but I keep maps of where I put 'em

Taylor and Kanye buried the hatchet at the 2015 VMAS; Kanye even sent her flowers after the event. Taylor plays on burying an actual hatchet, due to the fact that she “dug up” an old feud after Famouswas released. The phrase originates from conflict among and with Native Americans in the Eastern United States, specifically concerning the formation of the Iroquois Confederacy and in Iroquois custom in general putting away the tomahawk at the cessation of hostilities. Weapons were to be buried or otherwise cached in time of peace.

Reputation precedes me, they told you I'm crazy

This is a reference to Taylor’s 2014 smash hit “Blank Space”:

“Got a long list of ex-lovers, they’ll tell you I’m insane.”

I swear I don't love the drama, it loves me

Another lyric of Taylor’s that emphasizes her perspective of the Kim/Kanye feud. The drama loves her in that Kanye is the one who called Taylor to begin with. Kanye is the one who withheld “the lyric” from Taylor and made it look like she approved through Kim’s Snapchat story. Well said, Taylor, and I think we can all agree with you considering your proof for this sole lyric is, in fact, the entirety of Reputation, as is.

And I can't let you go, your hand prints on my soul
It's like your eyes are liquor, it's like your body is gold
You've been calling my bluff on all my usual tricks
So here's the truth from my red lips

I wanna be your endgame (endgame)
I wanna be your first string (me and you, first string)
I wanna be your A-Team (be your A-Team now, A-Team)
I wanna be your endgame, endgame
I wanna be your endgame (oh, I do)
I wanna be your first string (first string)
I wanna be your A-Team (A-Team)
I wanna be your endgame, endgame
