#30DAYCHANNELCHALLENGE day 2, chosen channel: CITIES

1. Paris, France

The city of light has proven time and time again its ability to shine brightly in the face of all else. Resilient, defiant and endlessly romantic, regardless of the number of tourists that pour into the city each year, Paris never loses its charm. No matter how many times you visit, Europe’s dynamic capital of style, intellectualism, arts and culture offers something new at every turn. Venture down an unassuming backstreet and you’ll stumble upon a one-of-a-kind boutique; head east to find speciality coffee shops and hip bars; tour the city’s galleries for world debuts of the latest exhibitions.

2. Mexico City, Mexico

Tell someone you’re going to Mexico City and their first response will usually be: “Isn’t that dangerous?” But so long as you take the same precautions you would in any large city, the answer is no. Mexico’s bustling capital and economic powerhouse can be a fun and safe destination. Hip neighbourhoods, incredible architecture, humble street markets and an eclectic culture combine in this frenetic, lovable city. An undeniably gritty cool pervades in the streets, and new wave mezcalerías, art galleries, vintage boutiques and cafés continue to transform neighbourhoods like bohemian La Roma and design-minded Condesa. Mexico City’s energy is almost addictive enough to forget everything else this rest this diverse country has to offer.

3. Amsterdam, The Netherlands

With a new London to Amsterdam Eurostar service (calling at Antwerp and Rotterdam) set to start in 2016, the Dutch capital is about to get a whole lot more accessible. The city is well prepared, with revamped museums, a state-of-the-art film institute and a flourishing hub of avant-garde culture in the regenerated NDSM shipyard – a hangout housing restaurants, bars and a skatepark.

5. Bangkok, Thailand

Bangkok is the perfect blend of old and new, East and West, along with the romance of the Chao Phraya River, which is intertwined with the city it flows through. Golden palaces, floating markets and magnificent porcelain-laid spires are just a few of the other reasons to visit. The Grand Palace is a must, as a compound of palaces and temples where you’ll discover Thailand’s most important relic, the Emerald Buddha, a fifteenth-century sculpture that’s actually made of jade.

6. Shanghai, China

Shanghai is China’s largest city as well as its most cosmopolitan, providing the chance to experience the past, present and future all at the same time. It’s also the nation’s most prosperous city and one of its greatest economic and cultural centers. The Huangpu River splits it into two districts: Pudong and Puxi. The Pudong skyline looks like a scene from “The Jetsons,” with its bulbous Oriental Pearl TV and Radio Tower. On the Puxi side, stroll the Bund riverside district to get a taste of old Shanghai.

Mumbai is not the place to go if you’re looking to escape crowds and chaos, but there are peaceful moments to be found and a number of other reasons to visit. Take a stroll across the sand at Chowpatty Beach, visit Mani Bhavan, once the home of Mahatma Gandhi. 12. Barcelona, Spain

Barcelona is a patchwork of architectural styles displays dark, Gothic façades next to the harlequin buildings of the Modernistas and the skyline-piercing constructions of Jean Nouvel or Herzog and de Meuron, and a day spent admiring them can be topped off with a sundowner on one of the city’s seven beaches before dinner at any number of Michelin-starred gastronomic temples or humble, family-run tapas bars.
