When you hold only negative view points in you're head, mainly towards yourself you are not going to recover, simple as that. I've struggled with my own battle of self love for years, I know.

Building yourself up comes from replacing those negative thoughts with positive ones, or at least adding at least one positive thought to negative ones.

When you begin to change your negative ways to positives, you can then begin to become your best friend, by talking through situations that have happened and being there for yourself.
