Why are boys taught that they
have a right to
space?
That they can stretch and expand to
their hearts’ content,
while girls are taught to stay contained,
elegant, and pretty, and small, and slim,
limited?
Am I not entitled with my feebled reach
to wrap my slender fingers around
what is not offered to me?
Maybe my limits are part of my charm,
my petite self-control, my delicacy
entices you?
Or maybe space is power
and maybe I long to trade
butterfly heartbeats
for a crashing tsunami?
What if I want to
arrive like a hurricane
speak in thunderstorms
cry in oceans
and leave in a seismic echo?
