Hey there!

So I went to Rio a few times and I'd like to share my experience and maybe give some advice.
Well, Rio is a beautiful city but it's also pretty big and full of people, so if you're looking for a quite holiday you should definitely visit other places from Brazil (the whole country has amazing landscapes and beaches so that wouldn't be a problem. I personally recommend Angra dos Reis).

-Public transportation: very easy to use! People are mostly friendly so they help you when you don't know how to reach a specific place.

-Language: it took me some days to get used to the language, I personally find portuguese very difficult, but I could managed to understand and local people made an efford too.

-Insecurity: well, this is a difficult topic because nothing happened to me in Rio, but sooo many people told me to be careful. My recommendation is not to walk alone at night and take care of your things such us bags or mobile phones/cameras. When I visited a very popular neighborhood at night (It's called Lapa. Super nice btw!) I took a cab.

PLACES TO VISIT!

  • First Cristo Redentor and Pão de Açúcar are the most famous attractions and are worth it. I visited both hiring excursions. I'd say you shouldn't go without a tour to Cristo Redentor because it's near fabelas, but to Pão de Açúcar I don't see why not. That was my favourite.
  • Then Lapa. I mentioned it before, it's a really nice neighborhood which gets full of people at night. Everyone goes there. During the day is nice too because you can see Selaron Stairs and others things from Santa Teresa.
  • Rio de Janeiro's Cathedral. Extremely weird! You should see it yourself, I think it is really pretty from the inside and it is a must whether you are religious or not.
  • If you'd like to go to a mall, Barra Shopping is the biggest one in Rio de Janeiro and it's located in Barra da Tijuca.
  • And last but not least, Rio's beaches! Copacabana and Ipanema are the famous ones. My hotel was located in Copacabana, in front of the beach, and I loved it. This year I went in March and the amount of people was good, but a few years ago when I stopped for a day in Rio during Janaury I couldn't even walk! So I think the date you choose to go is also important.
