"An unknown number was shining on the screen"

Chapter 5
Never mind

Ivy and Mary laid side by side on Ivy's tiny bed. They both were browsing through their phones. It was almost twelve o'clock at night already, but Ivy wasn't even a bit tired. She just couldn't go to sleep, she was waiting an important call. And she knew that even if she tried to get some sleep, she probably couldn't. There were too many thoughts running wild inside her pretty head.

"I don't think he's gonna call", Mary said staring her phone intensively. Ivy shot a desperate look in Mary's direction. She wasn't ready to give up. Not just yet.

"I'm not trying to be mean, I just don't think anything is gonna happen, sorry."

"Ugh! Can't you just have a little faith in me?" Ivy sighed irritated. She dropped her phone onto the bed beside her and turned to face the mattress. She let out a loud groan.

"C'moon Ivy, just admit you were wrong. It's not that hard."

"I will not!"

"Finee! But I'm leaving, I have to go to school tomorrow and so do you. So if I were you I would just forget this nonsense", Mary said standing up and diving into her jacket. She slid her boots on and placed her hand on the door knob, but before she opened the door she turned around and said:

"Ivy, please get some sleep. I'll see you tomorrow." And then she opened the door and slipped into the hallway. And Ivy was surrounded by silence.

When the silence got too intense, she crawled out of the bed to her laptop and put on her favorite playlist. She went to the bathroom, washed her makeup off and took a quick shower. When she was brushing her hair in front of the mirror she heard a ringin coming from the other room. She threw the hairbrush to the sink and ran to her nightstand, where her phone was laying.

She picked up the phone and looked at the screen. An unknown number was shining on the screen. Ivy hesitated a short instant before picking up.

"Oh! Hi! Great, it's you! I was afraid I called the wrong number. I mean I did at first, but I thought I did it again. Anyway it's great I didn't, right?" Ivy recognized the voice. It belonged to the boy she had met at the cafe. Ivy let out a relieved sigh.

"Yes it's me. So you found your phone?"

"No. I mean yes, but no. I didn't exactly find it. It kind of found its way to me, if that makes sense?"

"As weird as it is, it does make sense. But how? Were did you find it?" Ivy asked truly interested in the matter.

"Back at my place. I just got home, and when I saw it on my bed my first instinct was to call you", he explained.

"So you didn't check your messages yet?"

"Nope. Why?"

"Could you check them quickly, please?"

"Yeah, sure... There's nothing there. Why did you ask?" The boy sounded confused.

"Never mind. I just got my phone stolen by the same man that took yours. I thought the cases might've been connected, but apparently not. Well thanks anyway, good night!"

But Ivy didn't hear the rest of the sentence as she ended the call. Why did everything just get more complicated when she was trying to sort it out? What did the universe have against her?
