Hi and welcome to this article! Today I wanted to give you some life advice and some lessons I've learned over the years.

I've also included a few articles and Tumblr posts I think you should read at the bottom of this article.

I know this article is a bit all over the place, but I hope you like it anyway. Enjoy!

- Have chapstick, gum, spare change and tissues with you at all times (next to your phone, keys, and ID-card).

- You don’t necessarily have to like them, but know some classic songs everyone knows. Here’s a list that covers most of them: https://open.spotify.com/user/michelleilx/playlist/38HkS105AXoP4dB8wVdoXH
- Also on that same topic, be able to name a few songs from famous artists back in the day. Know your Sweet Child O’ Mines and Hey Jude’s. Just saying.

- Have an answer ready when someone asks you for your favorite song/artist, book, and movie.

- Have basic knowledge about the Harry Potter series and High School Musical series. Maybe also Lord of the Rings and Star Wars.

- When the music is right, dance.

- Never say ‘maybe’ if you want to say ‘no’. Also, never agree to something you don’t want, no matter the peer pressure.

- Always try to recycle, donate your clothes or give them another purpose. Here’s why: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BiSYoeqb_VY

- Don’t accept the way things are if you think they’re wrong and you can do something, anything, about it. Start a fucking revolution if necessary.

- When traveling and being out in a beautiful place, try to just sit back and enjoy the atmosphere. Don’t be that person that whips out their phone, takes a million pictures and walks away. You’re out in a beautiful place, please enjoy it. But:

- Take pictures of yourself and the people you’re with while traveling, at beautiful places but also when you’re doing normal stuff. Don’t ever get back from a holiday only with pictures of things you could just google better versions of. There are a million pictures of the Eiffel Tower, but zero of you with the Eiffel Tower. Take pictures of yourself and the people you are there with.

- If you’re in another country, try to eat traditional foods from there. Appreciate the culture! Try to avoid going straight to the nearest McDonald's or Pizza Hut you can find.

- Hold doors open for people, even when you’re mad/sad.
- Try to smile, even when you’re mad/sad.

- Have some games on our phone in case you ever are somewhere without Wi-Fi and you have nothing to do.

- When going out on a first date with someone, always make sure someone you trust knows where you are.

- Have a more intricate password on your phone/laptop than ‘password’ or ‘1234’.

- Always say yes to adventures.

- Tip the waiter, the delivery person, the street performer.

- Have a junk-email address or use 10-minute mail in case you ever need to sign up somewhere shady -> https://10minutemail.com/

- If you ever need to make important decisions, make sure you have a solid backup plan.

- If you ever have an important question (not school-related) or want to look up something, put it in the Notes app on your phone. That way, you'll have a full list of things to look up when you have free time! Stay curious, my dear.

- Never make fun of someone who’s speaking in a language they’re not fluent in/that is not their mother tongue. See the Tumblr post about this below.

- Respect everyone’s opinion, as long as they don’t disrespect other people’s existence.

- Try to avoid saying bad stuff about other people you wouldn’t say to their face. This will keep you out of a lot of trouble. “Don’t let your mouth get into something your ass can’t handle.” – The Basketball Diaries

- When someone tells you their favorite song, listen to it. You learn a lot about people when you listen to the songs that mean something to them.

- When bored with everything, watch Ted-Talks, Ted-ED, The School Of Life or other educational videos on Youtube. Keep on educating yourself. Also check out the article about what to do when bored below.

- Call people out on their bullshit every once in awhile.

- Genuinely compliment other people, whoever they are, and not only on their appearance. Say things like “You have an amazing taste in music!”, “You’re so talented at writing!” or “I love how your presence just lights up the room!” You have no idea how much it can mean to them.

- Always accept a compliment as well.

- Words to get through your head:

- Never ever ever work out because you think people will like you more when you are thinner/skinnier. You are beautiful the way you are, no matter what ‘shape’ you are. Work out because you want to be healthy, and because you want to be in shape. For yourself. Not for anyone else. Do it for yourself.

- Make friends with people from other countries. Just do it.

- Take pictures of everything you think is extraordinary (except for people without their consent, particularly your crush haha).

- If you’ve got a gut feeling about someone, trust it. Sometimes your heart just knows whether a person is an angel or a shitbag before you even met them.

- When you’ve finished writing an essay/article and you want to correct your mistakes and typos, change your font (size). It’s easy to read over your errors if you don’t change the visual form of your essay, that’s why your typos become more obvious when the text you’ve read so many times is shifted. Or put your text in Google translate and listen to your text.
- Ask a friend to proofread your paper, as they’re new to your text.
- Download Grammarly, it checks your grammar errors and other stuff (it’s free woohoo!).

- When doing a presentation, ask a friend of yours beforehand to ask you an easily answered question during the presentation, so you look like you know your stuff really well and get a higher grade.
- Also, ask a friend to sit in front and do hand symbols in case you need reassurance whether you’re talking too soft or too slow/fast.

- Try to avoid studying with music on: it’s been proven that you remember less of the reading material you're supposed to study, as you’re distracted by the lyrics and the tones. If you have to, listen to classical music or to rain to help you concentrate.

- Be friendly to your teachers. This can have great influence, as they’re the ones who grade your papers. And if your teachers are absolute demons, try to make them not hate you.

- Don’t be rude to your teachers either. They’re there to educate you, so don’t interrupt them constantly from doing their job, and talk when you’re allowed (unless you have a demon teacher).

- If you’re in class and you don’t understand something, just ask the teacher. That’s what they’re there for, they are there to educate you. If you’re too shy to ask, wait until everyone’s working and go up to the teacher’s desk, or ask a friend to ask the teacher. Don’t be left with a million questions and don’t understand shit when making the test/exam.

- Keep diaries, drawings, pictures with friends, anything that means something to you. Don’t throw it away. It’s so awesome to look back on it later.

- If you can’t afford to buy something twice, don’t buy it.

- If you have trouble drinking water regularly, pick a word you hear often. Every time you hear/read that word, you drink water. It’s kinda a drinking game, without you getting hammered hahaha.

- Always be kind to the new kid in your class or wherever. You’d appreciate it if that were you.

- There are two sides to every story. Always ask for the other person’s perspective.

- Learn to drink tea and/or coffee.

- Don’t plan important events on April 1st, especially if you and your family/friends are pranksters.

- Don’t point out scars, moles, bruises, stretch marks, sunburns, hair you’re not used to it being, acne et cetera on people. Don’t take time out of your day to make a person feel bad about themselves (this applies to other things as well). Don’t be that person.

- Learn to cook some basic stuff before you turn 18.

- Educate yourself on what’s going on in today’s world. Learn about #feminism, the #BlackLivesMatter movement, the #LGBT+ community, climate change, the refugee crisis et cetera.

Anxiety and stuff

- When you're anxious about going out in public, think of this: how many faces of by-passers can you recall? Exactly. In the grand scheme of things, no stranger will notice or remember a pimple on your nose or your red cheeks or your flyaway hair that you’ve been worrying so much about. Everything’s fine, my dear. You can do this.

Interesting short Tumblr post to read about this topic: http://seananmcguire.tumblr.com/post/156800593200/vintar-vintar-i-used-to-get-self-conscious

- When you’re stressed out or on the edge of a mental breakdown, keep your mind occupied. Draw or paint. Cook. Work out. Loudly sing to your favorite songs. Dance until you can’t anymore. Write down your thoughts. Throw with pillows or something soft if you have to. Whatever you do, stay indoors.
- And if you can’t take it anymore, curl up in your bed and cry it out. Sometimes you just got to. Afterwards, dry your tears and calm yourself down with some chill music or listen to the sound of the rain. Then get some ice cream and keep on slaying, dear.

- Important thing to get through your head: the past has passed, there’s nothing you can do to change it. It’s no use worrying about it. Let it go.

- Also, think about the thing you're stressed and/or worried about like this: will it matter in two years? If not, it’s probably not worth stressing out over.

- If you ever do some embarrassing shit and you’re worried about what people might think, please remind yourself that every single person does embarrassing shit, all the time. Every person has those moments where they say ‘mom’ to their teachers, fail a backflip, get rejected by their crush, or walk fully into doors. So don’t worry about it too much, as having awkward moments is very human.

A personal embarrassing moment of mine? I once fainted in class because I saw a picture of an embryo. I still don’t know why.

Anyways, what I want you to take away from here as well is that nobody remembers every single little embarrassing thing you do, not even you. So stop thinking about it. Remember to put the glass down:

In case you need a reminder:
I promise, you’re not alone out there. you are loved. you are important. you matter.

- Bangers to play at parties: Outkast - Hey Ya! and Black Eyed Peas – I Gotta Feeling.

- Whatever the fashion trend may be, wear what you like and you’re comfortable in.

- Always be kind to kids. Kids deserve to experience the world as a kind and safe place to explore.

- And lastly, never forget that the only consistency in life is change.

If you've made it this far, thank you so much for reading! I hope I was able to give you some life lessons/advice, even if the only thing you learned was to play Hey Ya! by Outkast at parties haha.

Please note that I'm not paid or whatever to recommend you the sites I mentioned, I'm just trying to help you out :)
