Traveling can be a lot of fun but it can also be pretty stressful! Here's some tips to make travel as easy as possible:

For Plane Trips:

  • Book your flight in advance (if you fly). This prevents you from missing out on a flight.
  • Pack early + use a checklist. Making a list helps you keep track of what you need so you can't forget. Make sure to pack days in advance so that you can run to the store if you don't have something.
  • Bring an empty bottle. When you get past security, you can fill it up with fountain water, saving you money so you don't buy water.
  • Print your boarding pass at home. You can skip the pass printing line and go straight to bag check/security.
  • Check your flight status before you leave. In case your flight is delayed or cancelled, you don't want to go all the way to the airport to find out. Just check from home.
  • Get to the airport early. This allows a time cushion to check bags and get through security, so you aren't running to your gate. It also gives you time to get food/drink and go to the bathroom before boarding.
  • Have a carry on. Put in snacks, things to do (books, music, iPad for Netflix, etc), important papers (like hotel and rental car information), etc.
  • Research where you're going. Find places to eat and points of interest. If there's a different language used, learn some basic phrases like "please" and how to ask for things.
  • Wear comfortable clothes. Plane seats are not the most comfy, so it helps if you have on cozy clothing. Also, bring a hoodie/sweatshirt in case the plane is too cold.
  • Check into your hotel before. This way, it's faster and easier when you do arrive at your hotel.

For Road Trips:

  • Still pack early + use a checklist.
  • Know a route before hand, and printout directions or use your GPS.
  • Keep track of how much gas you have. You do not want to get stranded.
  • Leave in enough time. Don't leave at 5 pm for a 11 hour drive. Calculate to make sure you get to your destination at a reasonable time.
  • Don't put everything in the trunk. Keep a bag up front with you containing snacks, games, books, etc.
  • Don't stop too much. Driving goes much faster if you don't stop every 20 minutes, so try to limit your stops.
  • Check for road delays and detours on your route. If you know of a detour before you come across it, you will be prepared rather than thrown for a loop.
  • For long drives, switch drivers every so often to avoid fatigue and drowsy driving.
  • Still learn about the place you're going. Know places to go and/or avoid.
  • Try not to travel in bad weather. And if you have to, take extra precautions. Store extra food, drinks, and clothes in your car.
  • Keep your car in good condition. Do not drive a car that is at risk for breaking. Check your car before you go, and when you fill up gas along the way.
