I think most of us know the struggle of designing small rooms. Your bedroom might be barely big enough for a bed, or you need to fit a dining area or a home office in your already tiny living room.
It can be tricky to fit everything you need into a small space. But there are solutions which will help make your small spaces look both inviting and multi-functional.

Here are a few tips to help you make your space appear bigger!

  • Use light colours on the walls and the floor

Dark colours can make a room seem cozier, but they absorb light instead of reflecting it, making the space feel smaller. Light coloured walls and floor make the room feel airy.
  • Choose statement furniture

You may have heard that small furniture in a small room is the way to go, but one (or a few) large piece(s) of furniture make the room feel larger, as multiple small pieces actually increases the look of clutter.
  • Pull the furniture away from the walls

Don't automatically place your furniture against walls. Even a few inches/centimeters in between the wall and the bigger items can make the space look bigger.
  • Use dramatic art

Instead of a gallery wall, choose big and bold art pieces. They can add a whole lot of drama to a room and make the room seem bigger in the process.
  • Leave your windows uncovered

More light gives a space depth. If you want something to give you privacy, try roman shades or blinds. If you want curtains, make sure that their colour is the same as the walls'. Sheer curtains are also a great option.
  • Add mirrors

Mirrors are a great way to make your space look bigger. Place it across from the window or behind a chest or a sitting area to make it look like a whole another space is tucked behind it.
  • Floor-to-ceiling storage

This is a great way to add storage and it will also expand how high your ceiling looks.
  • Furniture with exposed legs

Exposed legs create a sense of light and space.
  • Buy multi-functional furniture

Ottomas, for example, can be used as both a coffee table and extra seating, all at once.

Overhead fixtures draw the eye to one spot. Try adding several lighting elements in a small room.
