'My best advice for anyone out there that feels like, 'I don't have a million followers so why should I even give it a shot,' is that it's not about the numbers - it's about the engagement. That's how you can build influence.' - Michelle Phan

Hey guys, it's Yasmin, I'm so chuffed that you've decided to read my first ever WeHeartIt article, thank you so much to the WeHeartIt Team for letting me be one of the first people to try out this feature, I really hope articles will be a great success and I personally, can see myself using articles a lot.

So, I was thinking about what to write about for my first article, and I decided it would be a great idea to write about what so many of you guys ask me the most, and that is how to get more followers on WeHeartIt. And with my 100,000 (and counting) followers I do have a few tips and tricks to help you guys out. There isn't any set rules to follow to get more followers, to get 'popular' or 'WeHeartIt famous', I don't really consider myself particularly 'popular' or 'WeHeartIt famous', I just happen to have a larger than average following. What I may say may be different to someone else, and to be honest a lot of it is down to luck but I do have some tips what I'm going to say are just some things that have helped me get more followers.

This is probably one of the most important tips I have for you, and that is to upload images. Let's be real, when you are scrolling through the all images page and see an image you like, you probably are interested to see who uploaded the image so you can see more images they have on their canvas, and if you see more images you like from them, there is a pretty good chance you'll end up following them. But, when you see an image you like, do you check out the list of people who has also hearted it? I'm guessing probably not. The point is that if you want to get more followers, you have to get people to know you exist and more people will know you exist by uploading images, making people more likely to look at your page and therefore follow you if they like that they see.

Wouldn't it be amazing if you woke up one morning and found out you gained thousands of followers overnight? That would be pretty cool. Unfortunately though, nobody lives in an ideal world and this sort of this just doesn't happen I'm afriad. I've been on WHI for almost 4 years and I've only just reached 100,000 followers, and my first year I didn't upload ANYTHING and I barely had 50 followers at the time. Getting followers on WHI is a process and does take time and a lot of moments of self-doubt and thoughts like "why am I doing this?" And/or " I won't get anywhere" but YOU WILL AS LONG AS YOU DONT GIVE UP! If you've got a few followers already, even if it's like 10 followers, make sure you stay active. Everyone knows you have a life outside social media and have priorities in your life, wether that is school or work and other commitments, but it is so important to stay active, you don't have to post loads of images a day, even if its just a couple of images a week, you are letting your followers know that you appreciate them and this will make them still follow you instead of letting your follower count drop, which you don't want.

Okay so, you know that I mentioned that its important to stay active and post regularly, do that but don't please please please don't overdo it. I see so many people post hundreds of images per day and I cringe so much because it screams that they are really desperate to get followers, and its such a shame because they do have really lovely feeds, but the rate they are posting at just puts me off in my opinion. I personally want to follow someone who has a nice feed and I can see updates from them but I don't want to see my dashboard swamped in their uploads, because it does come across as desperate, offputting and annoying because I want to see images from other people I follow too.

Talking about lovely looking feeds, your feed/page is extremely important. When meeting somoene for the first time in real life, first impressions is key, right? Well, that is the same on WHI, or any other social media platform. Before people choose to follow you, thy will go for a browse of your page before following you so its so important your feed is consistent so people with similar interests will be more likely to follow you. People are more likely to follow people with themes, and what i mean by a 'theme' is a colour scheme to follow so your feed flows nicely and is aesthetically pleasing to current and potential followers. Someone on WHI who is constantly killing it with her amazing themes is Kim (@music_infinity) and she is an incredible inspiration if you are trying to etablish a theme. Obviously sticking to a specific colour scheme is completely option and you don't have to pick a theme because I'm not going to lie, it does take a lot of work to maintain (but it is worth it). If you don't fancy going down the route of having a theme, you can still get lots of followers, someone that doesn't have a specific theme who always has an incredible feed is Sabine (@the_night_skies). Her page doesn't have a certain colour scheme, but if you check out her feed, all of images still flow nicely with each other and does make her page very aesthetically pleasing.

If you can take one piece of advice from this article, it would be this: PLEASE BE YOURSELF. This is the most important tip because if you are posting images that are popular or you think will be popular that you don't necessarily like yourself, you are not going to truly enjoy your time on WHI, and people can see through that. People want to follow people who are having fun and enjoying what they do on WHI. If you're not having fun and constantly thinking things like "I must upload this image because (someone) uploaded it and it got really popular and that will get me noticed and I will get more followers." No. No honey no. That is not the mindset you need to get followers. You know what, the most important tip to get followers? Don't think about the numbers. It is literally just a number. If you are constantly thinking that you need more followers and are doing things to get you followers that do not represent you, then you are draining yourself, and it won't be worth it anymore because you'll become a zombie that keeps refreshing their page to see if someone new has followed them, and what is the fun in that?

I really hope these tips help you. If this article helps you out and/or if you like this article, it would mean the absolute world to me if you let me know, I love helping you guys out and I'm thinking about making this a little series if you want, again let me know, I'd love to hear from you. Talk to you guys soon.

Lots of love, Yasmin
