She was in science class.
He sat next to her.
The two never said a word to each other before today.
"So, we're partners?" He asked her while rubbing the back of his neck awkwardly. She flipped her sable colored hair over her shoulders and adjusted her circle rimmed glasses.
"Yes, I think we are."
The two then looked into each other's eyes. They admired every aspect of each other, like how the air conditioner tickled their skin and created small hills all over their bodies.
Their eyes quickly snapped back to their papers once they realized they were staring.
"So what do you want to make the project about?" He asked her.
"Space." She said quietly. He smiled and nodded his head.
Just then someone came by their table and knocked the boy's belongings to the floor. They snickered and sauntered away with their friends back to their seats.
The boy balled his fist on the table and looked down with a crimson face.
The girl frowned and went to pick up his things.
"Do they always do this?" She asked him softly.
The boy rubbed his prosthetic arm and looked out the window beside him.
"Yeah."
-
"So, you like space?" He asked her as they walked through the park together.
It was nighttime, and the stars shone bright like sapphires in the indigo sky.
"Yes, I love space. I think of it as a labyrinth of opportunities. A place where you could get lost in and wander around freely to different worlds that you know nothing about."
The boy nodded his head.
" I can see that, i like your passion for it. " he said and the girl smiled and tucked her hair behind her ear.
"What's your favorite thing about space?" He asked out of nowhere.
"That's a good question. My favorite thing would have to be comets."
"Oh yeah, why?" He inquired.
She laughed. "Well, i don't know, they're just cool. I think of comets as the free spirited people in life. They go as they please, with no rules at all. They can be themselves without the judgement of others, and as they pass by they leave their mark across the sky." She explained and the boy stopped walking.
She looked behind her to see his still frame.
"Is something wrong?" She asked with a frown.
"I asked our teacher to make us partners," he whispered.
She scrunched her eyebrows together and looked at him with her mouth agape a little.
"I was always so scared to talk to you, but this time I knew I had to muster up some courage before it was too late. I've always thought you were beautiful, the prettiest girl in our whole grade in fact. And although we never spoke, you were the only one who didn't look at my metal arm and see it as anomaly, instead you would wave at me and smile before looking away. You are interesting, someone who I knew I needed to know more about. I like you, a lot. You don't have to feel the same way, but I had to tell you." He spouted to her meekly.
The girl adjusted her glasses and fixed her face quickly.
" I- "
"Hey!"
They both turned to see the kids from earlier walking towards them. The boy's face ashened as they got closer.
"Oh," One of the boys looked at the girl. "This is your girlfriend now?" He asked with a smirk.
The girl frowned. "Leave us alone."
The kid looked at her and shook his head.
"She's a bit chubby, I thought you'd go for something thinner," He said and his friends around him laughed.
The boy then stood up straight and got in front of the girl.
"Don't ever say anything like that about her again. She's amazing, but i wouldn't expect dense minded individuals like yourself to understand that."
The kids were angered at his words.
So they did what they knew best.
One of the boys punched him.
And another boy punched him.
And so did another.
They all punched the boy while the girl wheeped in the background trying her best to stop them, but it was no use. There were too many.
The boy laid on the grass covered ground while being hit and looked to the vast night sky above. In a flash, he saw a star zoom across the sky leaving its mark. He smiled and looked at the girl who was balling her eyes out screaming for help.
"You're my comet," he said to her.
And then his eyes closed.
